Proposed Animal Shelter Bill To Limit Access To Low-Cost Veterinary Care

Proposed legislation currently being discussed in the South Carolina Senate is seeking to limit public access to low-cost veterinary care offered by non-profit animal shelters.  Senate Bill 687 (SB 687) would require animal shelters to obtain written documentation of low-income status from the pet owner prior to performing veterinary care beyond the basic medical services.

SB 687 would also restrict non-profit mobile animal clinics from operating within 7 miles of private-practice veterinary offices.
