COMPANION PLATFORM™ / PLATFORM™

Hospital Locations of Veterinary Consolidators

CARE for Pets™ has recently launched PLATFORM,™ a first-of-its-kind searchable online database tool that tracks acquisitions of veterinary consolidators for the pet care industry. Corporate consolidators acquire individual veterinary practices as quickly as possible and merge them into a single, larger corporation. The entity is typically resold within 3 to 5 years to another investor(s) for a substantial profit. In some cases, larger consolidators may opt to merge with another industry consolidator and or realize their investment gains through an initial public offering (IPO) — exit strategy.

Research conducted by CARE for Pets™ shows that many consolidators fail to publicly divulge the company names of their acquired individual veterinary practices on their corporate-facing website — vast majority fail to communicate changes in ownership on their individual practice websites to pet owners.

There are more than 70 corporate consolidators operating in the U.S. The PLATFORM™ app is currently available for a limited number of consolidators — additional hospital groups will be available in 2025.

In 2025 and 2026, pets.care will add Company Profile pages to our PLATFORM™ app. These pages, using publicly available data, will provide more information about the corporate consolidator and may include company news (press releases, news coverage, blog posts and articles from the pets.care news blog), its leadership team and founders (including statements from these individuals, and job history), company funding, acquisitions, investments, private equity recapitalizations, Federal Trade Commission (FTC) requirements, case studies and research, employee compensation including incentive-based compensation, links to employee reviews on popular job sites, and any other relevant information.

    • Among the remedy proposals, is a requirement that veterinary practices clearly disclose their ownership, both online and at their physical locations — the United Kingdom is one of the most CONCENTRATED veterinary markets in the world where practices are owned and operated by a small number of corporate groups. Consolidators own a combined nearly 60% of veterinary practices in the U.K., up from around 10% in 2013.

    • PRACTICE ACQUISITIONS LACKING OWNERSHIP TRANSPARENCY: At one practice group, there was no branding at its locations that identified the true corporate owner. Marketplace obtained a 2019 document emailed to vet staff that told veterinary staff that they should not “actively communicate to clients” about the buyout — they will create a “communication guide to use as a reference in the event that you are asked about the change.” Using publicly available data, CBC/Radio-Canada created a SEARCHABLE DATABASE of all animal hospitals that are owned or co-owned by the 3 biggest veterinary corporations in Canada — use our searchable table to find out who owns or co-owns your veterinary clinic.
